Digitization

Digitization - Protecting Memories for Future Generations
Digitization is no longer just a modern trend, but a vital process that allows our most valuable memories and documents to be preserved for the long term. We live in the age of a technological revolution where content stored in analog formats – be it family photos, VHS digitization, audio recordings, or important documents – is constantly threatened by natural deterioration, physical damage, and obsolete playback devices.
What exactly is digitization?
Digitization is a process in which content existing in analog format, often in a single copy, is converted into digital data. This includes scanning photos, converting videos and audio recordings, and transforming documents into electronic forms. During digitization, information on physical media is converted into a format readable, processable, and storable by computers, enabling long-term preservation and easy access.
However, digitization is not simply copying – it is a complex technical process where professionals pay special attention to ensuring that the quality of the original content is preserved as much as possible, or even improved. With the help of modern tools and software, color correction, noise reduction, and the restoration of damaged parts become possible.
For whom and why is digitization important?
For Individuals
Digitization can be extremely valuable for every family. Just think of those old family photo albums gathering dust in the attic, or the VHS tapes recording the most beautiful moments of childhood. These memories fade, get damaged, or simply become inaccessible over time as we can no longer find a device to play them.
Through digitization, these memories are not only preserved but also become easily shareable. The digital format allows grandchildren to see their grandfather's youth photos, or scattered relatives to reminisce about the past together. Moreover, digital files are easy to copy and store on various devices, minimizing the risk of loss.
For Companies and Institutions
For companies, digitization is not just about preserving memories, but also about increasing efficiency and legal compliance. Storing paper-based documents not only takes up space but is also time-consuming when a specific document needs to be found. Digital archives enable quick searching, reduce paper usage, and contribute to environmentally conscious operations.
Additionally, in many industries, legal regulations mandate the long-term preservation of certain documents. Digital storage not only offers a suitable solution for this but also provides protection against natural disasters, fires, and other unexpected events.
For Educational Institutions and Cultural Organizations
For schools, universities, museums, and libraries, digitization is key to preserving cultural heritage. Digitizing historical documents, old books, photo collections, and other cultural assets allows for broader accessibility without exposing the original objects to danger.
Why is digitization urgent?
The impact of time passing
Analog media inherently degrade over time. Photos fade, paper yellows and becomes brittle, and magnetic tapes lose their quality or become completely unusable. Every postponed day means memories are lost forever.
Color photos are particularly sensitive to changes in light, temperature, and humidity. The magnetic tape of VHS cassettes deforms over time if stored incorrectly, and audio cassettes can lose their original sound quality. These processes are irreversible – once a memory is damaged or lost, it may easily be impossible to restore its original state.
Technological obsolescence
Not only do the media degrade, but playback devices are also becoming increasingly rare. It is already difficult to find a slide projector, film projector, or VHS player in good condition today. As years pass, these devices may disappear completely, meaning even content on well-preserved media could become inaccessible.
Preservation and accessibility
Digitization is not just about preservation, but also about making memories and information easily accessible. Digital files can be shared in moments, viewed on various devices, and easily edited. This allows, for example, for the creation of family photo albums, editing of memory videos, or sharing on social media platforms.
The long-term benefits of digitization
Space saving
Digital storage saves significant space. A simple pendrive or cloud storage can hold thousands of photos, hours of video, and countless documents that would fill entire rooms in physical form.
Searchability and organization
Digital content is easily searchable and organized. Based on tags, dates, and keywords, we can quickly find the memories we are looking for without spending hours turning over boxes and albums.
Backup and redundancy
Digital files are easy to copy and store in multiple locations. This means that if one storage device fails, the memories are not lost, as backups exist.
Possibilities for quality improvement
Modern digitization technologies not only preserve but often improve the quality of the original content. Through color correction, noise reduction, and sharpening, old photos and videos can come to life again. Moreover, there are now numerous AI-supported methods for improving and upscaling photos, videos, or audio materials.
Digitization is therefore not a luxury, but a necessity – an investment in the future of memories and valuable information. The sooner we start this process, the more memories we can save for posterity.
Digitization Services - A Solution for Every Memory
Emlékmentő has been dealing with the digitization of various analog contents since 2009, and we are proud to say that we have become one of the companies with the largest capacity for handling memories in the country. Our wide spectrum of services ensures that no matter what type of memory or document you have, we will find the right solution to convert it into digital form.
Video Tape Digitization - Rebirth of Video Memories
The digitization of VHS and camcorder tapes is perhaps one of our most sought-after services, and for good reason. The most popular video storage format of the 80s and 90s preserves defining moments in the lives of many families: first steps, birthdays, weddings, family vacations, and holidays. However, these memories are extremely vulnerable, and VHS players are becoming increasingly difficult to acquire.
During our professional digitization process, we examine every tape individually, clean the tape if necessary, then convert it to MPEG2 format using high-quality digital equipment. We also pay attention to color and sound filtering, so the result is often better quality than the original tape's current condition.

Photo Scanning - Preserving Moments in Pixels
Scanning traditional paper and Polaroid photos
Family photo albums are true treasure chests that every family should preserve. We process images of various sizes with our professional photo scanners, from small ID photos to A3 posters. In our service we pay great attention to color fidelity and the preservation of details.
Scanning is done with manual feeding, so a "seeing, understanding human" monitors the process. In extra mode, we also chemically clean the pictures, then digitize them at the appropriate resolution. We can provide images in JPEG and TIFF formats, depending on your intended use.
Digitization of slides and negatives
Slides hold a special place in the history of photography, as they resulted in extremely sharp, color-rich images. Using special slide frames and our professional Epson photo scanner, we transform these small masterpieces into high-resolution digital images.
During slide digitization we pay special attention to preserving the original vividness of colors. Besides normal 35mm slide negatives, we can also digitize smaller Pocket and APS formats.
Scanning medium format and glass negatives
Besides classic Leica, we can also digitize larger 45x45mm, 60x60mm, 60x45mm or even 60x120mm and X-ray films.
Moreover, we can even scan glass negatives without reflection and Newton rings.

Audio Digitization - Saving Musical and Conversational Memories
Cassette tape digitization
The era of cassette tape recorders left behind many valuable audio materials: family conversations, rare musical recordings, personal messages. We digitize these audio recordings with professional equipment, paying special attention to noise reduction and sound quality optimization.
Digitization of vinyl records (LP, singles, shellac)
Music on vinyl records are often unique recordings not available elsewhere. With our special turntables and digitizing equipment, we transform these treasures into CD-quality digital files.
Old audio recording devices
We also handle tapes from dictaphones, reporter tape recorders, and other old audio recording devices. These often contain recordings of historical value, which we can save with professional digitization.

Film Digitization - Preserving the History of Motion Pictures
8mm, Super 8, 9.5mm or 16mm films
Digitization of family films requires special expertise. We digitize 8mm and Super 8 films by projecting them into special optics, or scanning them frame by frame, and assembling them into motion pictures. During the process, we clean the film, replace ruined splices, and during digitization, depending on the technology, we apply color correction to frames or color grading to the recording to get the best possible result.

Document Digitization - Electronic Saving of Paper-based Information
Official documents
Digitization of certificates, diplomas, contracts, and other important papers requires special precision. Our service ensures that every tiny detail and stamp remains readable on the digital copy.
Historical documents and letters
Old family letters, historical documents, and manuscripts are often extremely fragile. We handle these with special care and use digitization methods that do not damage the original document.
Books and periodicals
We also digitize pages of rare books, family chronicles, or old journals. During book scanning, we pay special attention not to damage the binding.
